On This Date - Again on This Date - And Again...

I was looking at a list of events which occurred on August 10th in history, and came across some interesting parallels.  Here are a few I noticed:

Magellans
Two different Magellans, both the first to make very long exploratory journeys with similar goals.
  • In 1519 – Ferdinand Magellan set sail to be the first to circle the globe.
  • In 1990 – The Magellan space probe is the first spacecraft to reach Venus.

Revolutions
This date appears to be an important day for several major revolutions.
  • In 1680 – The Pueblo Indians began a revolt in New Mexico.
  • In 1776 – London learned of the Declaration of Independence during the American Revolution.
  • In 1792 – The French Revolution began with the storming of the Tuileries Palace.
  • In 1809 – Ecuador revolted and declared independence from Spain.

Treaties
And is also in important day when it comes to ending wars or revolutions.
  • In 955 – The Holy Roman Empire defeated the Magyars, ending a 50-year invasion.
  • In 1585 – Queen Elizabeth I signed a treaty with Dutch rebels.
  • In 1905 – Negotiations began to end the Russo-Japanese War.
  • In 1913 – The Treaty of Bucharest ended the Second Balkan War.
  • In 1920 – The Treaty of Sevres divided up Ottoman Empire at the end of World War I.

Institutions
Three of the world's greatest repositories of knowledge or art had their start today.
  • In 1675 – The cornerstone for the Greenwich Observatory was laid in England.
  • In 1793 – The Louvre Museum officially opened in Paris.
  • In 1846 – The Smithsonian Institution was chartered in Washington, D.C.

There you have it – a list of several patterns on this date in history.  Now I’m motivated to look for similar patterns on other dates.  I’d also love to hear of any other interesting historical patterns you have noticed!
